Armory College Prep
The program was founded by Derrick Adkins, and is now led by Aliann Pompey. The program focuses on NYC High School students, in need of a helping hand to realize their full potential. This year, about 250 students will receive the academic support, individual counseling and encouragement necessary to gain admission to college and a clear picture on how to pay for it.
At Armory College Prep, the students apply the skills they acquire as athletes - discipline, dedication and hard work to overcome the hurdles they face on the path to academic and social success resulting in benefiting both themselves and their communities. More than 95 percent of all Armory Prep students matriculate; many the first in their families to do so.
The program offers the following services to the students:
are on a college bound track and are taking classes outlined by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Above you will see the mentoring program at The New Balance Track and Field Center, which is a well rounded program for the athletes inspiring to attend Out of State prestigious schools or City or State Universities. The program engages the youth in programs that place positive principles into practice by providing the necessary programs that build healthy minds, bodies and spirits. The outcome of their vision will produce a well balanced student-athletes that will be able to handle the challenges of today and tomorrow. They will receive the beliefs to love themselves, enhance their minds, embrace diversity and build in their community.
I will be providing some additional information about mentoring: a primary goal of effective mentoring is to put systems in place that acknowledge these challenges and simultaneously support individuals to quickly development their skills and expertise to become effective and who have a positive impact on achievements.
The importance of the role of a mentor is to build trust, which is the initial responsibility to establish with their mentee. Research indicates that mentoring is most effective when the individual trusts their mentor. They build the trust by creating a risk-free learning environment for the mentee by providing support that is non-judgmental and confidential. Confidentiality invites honesty, risk taking and self reflection by the mentee.
Overall, mentoring requires a willingness to share, listen and provide advice in a flexible relationship shaped by the needs of the mentee. Mentors are rewarded by sharing knowledge and skills, helping others succeed and supporting the profession. Mentees gain invaluable insight beyond their own education and experience.
In closing, "To acquire knowledge one must study. To acquire wisdom one must observe".
