This week was an eventful week, I went to several track meets, school guest speaking and time at the Armory.  I will begin with some of the meets I observed, Ivy Preparatory Schools Meet, it is comprised of eight schools in the Ivy Preparatory School League from the New York City as well as Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties.  The events that took place on the oval were the 1600m run, 600m dash, 1000m run, 300m dash, 3200m run, 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay.  On the infield, 55m hurdles, 55m dash, shot put, triple jump and long jump.  The girls competed first and then the boys.

Another meet was the PSAL, A Day of Distance, this meet was set up differently from the other meets meaning that they separate the competition for freshman, sophomore and varsity athletes.  In addition, athletes are limited to one running event, which includes a relay and one field event.  In the shot put, teams are limited to 3 athletes per gender.  The events were: 300-/3200 with the top 25 varsity only, 55 hurdles, 55m dash (top 32 boys and girls from the 2011-12 season, 1500/1600m, 4x800m relay and the 1000m.  The "six-twelve" rule are in effect for the meet, which requires that all PSAL teams must  maintain a minimum of twelve athletes on roster, six of whom must compete on the day of a PSAL meet.
When I attended the other meets is was mainly the same set-up, it is always exciting watching the students compete.  On a high school level, when they run well you can see their potential for the next level and when they don't you can see how they have the potential to get good at the end of high school.

T
he School Guest Speaking Events
When going to these engagements with Derrick, representing the NYC Road Runners.  He is very good with the students, there were several speaking events and each one has a different dynamic based on the students and grade level and the school.  The grades range from elementary, they are more eager to ask questions and not listen to the message.  They are runners themselves, so they are anxious with excitement of speaking and meeting an Olympian.  The message he convey's to the students is the same, but the delivery is different based on the students.  His message to the students no matter the age or grade, that they can excel in everything they put their minds to whether it is school, sports or an activity.  Although, he was a professional athlete, he was a professional students getting good grades for himself to be able to attend a good college.

The Armory
My time at the Armory, gives me the ability to observe coaches during there practice sessions, in addition to the other duties I take on to assist the staff.  I took some time to sit on the floor of the track to observe coaches and watch their styles of coaching.  I was mainly by the long jump pit,  it was both males and females.  Some things I saw from the coaches were there level of patience, their dedication to the team by making the necessary corrections with their form, landing before entering in the pit and the students listening and not getting frustrated from the instruction.  I also saw, other students helping their peers perform a correct drill to prepare them for the long jump.  The one learning was receptive to the assistance because they wanted to improve, and perform it correctly.  While I was watching this, there were many other running or field activities going on at the same time.

NYC Marathon Paper
Derrick assigned me to write a 2-3 page paper on the pros and cons of the 2012 NYC Marathon controversy due to Hurricane Sandy.  The news was not placing them in a good light, because the cancelled the event the Friday it was supposed to happen.  The Director, Mary Wittenberg was receiving some bad press for the timing of the decision.  She solely did not make the decision on her own, it was in collaboration with the Mayor of NYC.  Attached you will see the paper written for this assignment.
